Corrosion survey

Quality control of pipeline coatings

We assess the coating of a newly built pipeline before handover, using the cathodic polarisation method. More than 280 km checked.

KM 01

The cathodic polarisation method

The method gives an overall assessment of coating quality on a section of pipeline that is already laid and backfilled. The work is done by the company's corrosion diagnostics laboratory.

KM 02

What else we check

  • Coating resistance, from the attenuation of a low-frequency generator signal.
  • Applied coating thickness, at every stage of the work.
  • Adhesion of the coating to the metal.
  • Continuity of the coating.
  • Appearance, by visual inspection during the work.

Questions and answers

When is the cathodic polarisation check carried out?

On pipelines whose construction is complete, to assess the coating of a section as a whole.

Who carries out the inspection?

Specialists of the company's own laboratory; four FROSIO level II coating inspectors are on staff.
