Diagnostics

Non-destructive testing laboratory

Eleven methods for testing metal and welds, including phased-array ultrasonics.

KM 01

Testing methods

  • VT

    Visual testing

Visual and optical methods, external examination and measurement.

  • UT

    Ultrasonic flaw detection

Internal flaws in metal and welds.

  • UTT

    Ultrasonic thickness measurement

    Remaining wall thickness.

  • PAUT

    Phased array (PAUT-2)

Ultrasound with a steerable beam and a cross-section image.

  • PT

    Penetrant testing

Dye penetrant testing and the vacuum bubble method.

  • MT

    Magnetic particle testing

    Surface and near-surface cracks.

  • ET

    Eddy current testing

    Surface flaws in conductive materials.

  • AE

    Acoustic emission testing

    Flaws that grow under load.

  • MMM

    Metal magnetic memory

    Stress concentration zones.

  • HT

    Hardness testing

With a portable hardness tester on site.

  • VD

    Vibration diagnostics

Condition of pump and compressor units.

KM 02

Other examinations

  • Metallography: micro- and macrostructure, depth of decarburised layer, non-metallic inclusions, grain size, ferrite content.
  • Strength calculations.

People and certification

The laboratory has more than 20 engineers. Specialists are certified to level 2 under STB ISO 9712. Three are qualified in phased-array ultrasonics (PAUT-2) and four are FROSIO level II coating inspectors.

Questions and answers

How does PAUT differ from conventional ultrasonic testing?

A phased-array probe has many elements and forms a steerable beam, so a cross-section of the weld appears on screen as an image.

Is the laboratory accredited?

Yes, accreditation certificate No. BY/112 2.3986. Please ask the laboratory for the current scope of accreditation.
